Daggerless Indie Dev Dispatch — Week of September 7, 2026

September opened with PAX West and a calendar that finally starts moving again. GTA 6 is still the game most of the industry is orbiting, but this week belongs to two dates that actually matter for people who make and play smaller games: Valheim leaves Early Access on September 9, and WARDOGS opens on September 10.

If you are shipping anything in the next two weeks, those two launches will take a lot of the remaining attention.

WARDOGS Opens Thursday

WARDOGS (Bulkhead / Team17) enters Steam Early Access on September 10. A second closed beta ran September 3–6. The August test already peaked above 100,000 concurrent players. Wishlists are over a million. Early Access is $39.99, with the price set to rise at 1.0.

It is a 100-player, three-team tactical FPS on a large destructible map. Teams fight over a rotating control zone. Cash earned in-match buys guns, vehicles, and gear. The footage has been everywhere for weeks. This is no longer a quiet pre-order.

Bulkhead also published a list of reasons not to buy yet and told anyone who disliked the beta to refund. That kind of blunt store-page honesty is rare in this genre, and it has kept the conversation on the game instead of the usual Early Access distrust. Thursday is the open. The interest is already there.

How to Fish Has Not Slowed Down

How to Fish is still the indie sales story of late summer. Dazed Games’ co-op fishing game sold a million copies in two days after the August 20 launch. Estimates now put it well past two million, with reviews sitting around 95% positive. Peak concurrent players climbed past 370,000.

The reason is still not complicated. The game is fun. A cheap co-op fishing game people actually wanted to play with someone else, not a feature list they had to be talked into.

Valheim Hits 1.0

After more than five years in Early Access, Valheim leaves testing on September 9. Iron Gate is adding the final biome, Deep North, plus PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 versions with cross-play. That is a rare full stop on one of Steam’s longest-running survival hits.

For anyone still sitting on an Early Access build of their own: this is what a 1.0 looks like when the community has already been living in the game for half a decade. The launch is the last biome and the console doors, not a rewrite of the loop.

Smaller Wins and Show-Floor Reality

Mewgenics, Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel’s cat-breeding tactics roguelike, hits Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox on September 8, with Steam cloud saves linking across those versions. It already sold over a million on PC after the February launch.

Gamescom issued an apology this week for its first response to the hardware thefts that shut some indie booths down. If you are packing for a show, gear security is still part of the budget.

Double Fine, now independent again, announced Thank You Bus Driver as its first post-Xbox project and is running Amnesia Fortnight with backers picking which prototypes move forward. Tim Schafer’s line this week was simple: nobody puts Double Fine out of business except him.

Industry Notes

  • Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold over a million copies on launch day. Capcom says it will keep reviving older IPs.
  • The Blood of Dawnwalker also cleared a million in two days.
  • Don’t Nod addressed concern about impending layoffs and pointed at a market that has “changed profoundly.”
  • Aggro Crab launched a publishing label for small teams, targeting one or two games a year at up to $500,000 each.
  • Steam Survival Crafting Fest runs through today. Party-Based RPG Fest is September 14–21. Programming Fest is September 17–20.

Free Tools & Assets

  • Kenney.nl — still the most reliable CC0 source for prototypes and shipping games
  • itch.io free assets and OpenGameArt for broader hunting
  • Blendkit (Godot-compatible) for free 3D models, materials, and HDRIs
  • Epic Fab Limited-Time Free through September 8 at 9:59 AM ET: Sci-Fi Creatures Research Lab, KUBIKOS - Cube World, and Hyper Attribute Manager v4. Claim them before the window closes. Fab’s September Flash Sale also runs through September 11.

Daggerless Verdict

This is a three-day window. Valheim closes a five-year Early Access chapter on Tuesday. WARDOGS opens on Thursday with a million wishlists and a studio that already told people not to buy if the beta was not for them. How to Fish is still proof that a fun co-op toy at a low price can outrun almost anything on the calendar.

If you are launching this month, assume Thursday eats a lot of Steam traffic. Keep the store page tight, the demo honest, and the wishlist work consistent. Clarity still cuts through.
