Daggerless Indie Dev Dispatch — Week of August 31, 2026

Gamescom wrapped in Cologne on Sunday. The show floor did what it always does: demos, queues, a few games that actually feel good in the hands. The rest of the industry spent the week staring at November.

Rockstar’s GTA 6 window is now the calendar everyone else is measuring against. Cloud Imperium pushed Squadron 42 from late 2026 to Q2 2027. Chris Roberts said he will not launch a twelve-year project into “the attention buzz saw of GTA 6.” Coverage, streamers, and storefront real estate will tilt that way whether or not the game is on PC.

For people shipping this fall, that is the weather report. Do not plan a quiet launch next to a hurricane. Tighten the page. Get the demo out. Keep the wishlist work going.

How to Fish

Dazed Games released How to Fish on August 20. Two days later the studio posted that it had hit one million fishermen. Launch price was $7.99, cut to $4.95 through August 27. SteamDB logged a peak of more than 340,000 concurrent players. Reviews landed Overwhelmingly Positive.

It is co-op fishing for up to four. You wreck a boat, wash up on an island, catch fish, sell them, upgrade gear, and fight bosses so you can reach the next island. Rods are only part of it. Knives, guns, explosives, trick shots, and a little gambling sit next to the fishing line. Clips travel. Friends buy in because the ticket is cheap.

That is the whole pitch. Fun first. A price four people will actually pay. A loop you can show in fifteen seconds. Mortal Shell II and a Modern Warfare 4 pre-order wave launched in the same window. How to Fish still took the top of Steam’s paid sellers for the week of August 18–25.

WARDOGS Heads Into Early Access

WARDOGS (Bulkhead / Team17) enters Steam Early Access on September 10.
The last closed beta peaked above 105,000 concurrent players and briefly sat next to the Modern Warfare 4 beta on Twitch. Wishlists are over a million. Early Access is $39.99, with the price set to rise at 1.0.

It is a 100-player, three-team tactical FPS on a large destructible map. Teams fight over a rotating control zone. Cash earned in-match buys guns, vehicles, and gear. The YouTube footage has been circulating all week, and the reaction has been strong enough that this is no longer a quiet pre-order.

Bulkhead also did something unusual: they published a list of reasons not to buy yet and told anyone who disliked the beta to refund. That kind of blunt store-page honesty is rare in this genre, and it has helped the pre-launch conversation stay on the game instead of the usual Early Access distrust. September 10 is the Early Access open. The interest is already there.

The rest of the floor

Gamescom’s Indie Arena Booth packed about 200 games from 41 countries. indie.io put demos on Steam so nobody had to fly to Cologne to try the slate. Future Games Show and Opening Night Live dumped a pile of 2027 dates. Witcher 3 remaster news and a new expansion ate a lot of the big-room oxygen.

The useful takeaway is not “go to the show.” It is that a playable Steam demo still does more work than a booth most of your audience will never walk past.

Smaller wins

No More Room in Hell 2 left Early Access on August 11. Torn Banner says more than a million players have touched it since Early Access began, half of them after 1.0. Reviews are still mixed-to-mostly-positive. The studio already has autumn updates on the board. That is the unglamorous version of a hit: stay in the build, ship the 1.0, keep patching.

Industry Notes

  • Squadron 42 is now Q2 2027. GTA 6 is the stated reason.
  • 1047 Games stopped active work on Splitgate: Arena Reloaded and Empulse. Both move to peer-to-peer hosting in early September.
  • Schell Games, co-dev on Among Us 3D, laid off staff.
  • Xbox rolled out a disc-to-digital program.
  • Steam slapped Future? No Thanks! with an adults-only tag that the developer called humiliating; Valve later walked part of it back in some regions.
  • Kenney shipped a free Scribble Platformer expansion: 80 new sprites.

Daggerless Verdict

How to Fish sold because it is cheap, funny, and easy to show a friend. WARDOGS proved a mid-size shooter can still pack a test weekend if the loop is clear and the date is real. Gamescom was busy. GTA 6 already owns the fall conversation, and bigger studios are stepping out of its way. If you are launching soon, do not wait for a quiet week that may not arrive. Put a clean store page up. Ship an honest demo. Keep asking for wishlists every week, not once.
