Daggerless Indie Dev Dispatch – Week of July 13–20, 2026g
The biggest story this week came from the corporate side of the industry. Microsoft announced major layoffs at Xbox, cutting roughly 3,200 roles (about 20% of the division) as part of what leadership called the most significant restructure in Xbox history. Four studios are leaving the company: Double Fine and Compulsion Games are going independent, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are being sold. Arkane remains under review. Multiple major outlets covered the cuts extensively. Once again, the big-studio side of the industry is contracting while smaller teams continue shipping.
On a much brighter note for players and developers, Palworld officially left Early Access with its 1.0 release on July 10. The game hit nearly a million concurrent players on Steam in its first week and has maintained strong numbers, sitting near the top of the most-played charts alongside the usual suspects (Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2). The full launch has been widely praised for the amount of new content and polish.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced also launched on July 9 and has already sold over three million copies with Very Positive Steam reviews. On the indie side, Moonlight Peaks (the supernatural vampire life-sim that released earlier in the month) continues to earn solid word-of-mouth for its cozy-gothic vibes, farming, and character writing.
Godot released maintenance update 4.7.1 on July 14, focusing on stability and regression fixes. The team is recommending the upgrade for anyone still on the original 4.7 release.

The Daggerless Verdict
Another week, another reminder of the split in the industry. While Xbox continues restructuring and shedding studios, games like Palworld 1.0 show that focused, player-driven development can still produce massive hits. Indies who keep shipping, listening to feedback, and refining their process remain in a strong position. The underdogs are still very much in the game.
Check out Palworld’s full release if you haven’t, take a look at Moonlight Peaks for something cozier, update to Godot 4.7.1, and keep refining your own staging branch.
Stay feral out there,
— Daggerless
(Props to every dev who shipped an update, fixed a bug, or pushed through another week — you’re the reason we still open Steam every morning.)
