Daggerless Indie Dev Dispatch – Week of July 20–27, 2026

The end of July is bringing some heavy hitters. Halo: Campaign Evolved launches in advanced access on July 28 across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, giving players a full Unreal Engine 5 remake of the original Combat Evolved campaign with new missions and upgraded visuals. At the same time, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game and Splatoon Raiders (Switch 2) both landed on July 23, keeping the big-franchise conversation loud.

Meanwhile, Palworld continues to prove that a focused full launch can have long legs. Weeks after its 1.0 release, it is still sitting firmly in the top three most-played games on Steam, regularly clearing half a million concurrent players. The game’s ability to hold attention this long after leaving Early Access is one of the clearer indie success stories of the year.

On the smaller side, several titles found solid footing this week. Dinoblade (a dinosaur-themed action RPG with Souls-like combat) and a handful of other July releases are building early word-of-mouth, while earlier cozy and narrative-focused games like Moonlight Peaks continue to benefit from steady community support.

Godot also moved forward with the 4.8-dev2 snapshot on July 21. The update brings meaningful editor quality-of-life improvements, better VCS-friendly serialization, an upgraded Jolt Physics version, and other refinements. Development on 4.8 is progressing steadily ahead of GodotCon Boston.

Free Assets & Resources for Indie Devs

A few reliable free resources worth having bookmarked:

  • Kenney.nl — Clean, high-quality 2D sprites, tilesets, UI kits, and 3D models (all CC0).
  • Poly Haven — Excellent free PBR textures, HDRIs, and models.
  • Itch.io Free Assets — Growing library of modern pixel art, music, and sound packs.
  • Godot Asset Library — Continues to improve alongside the 4.7/4.8 cycle.
  • Freesound.org — Still one of the best free sound-effect libraries available.

Quick tool shoutouts:

Mod scene update: Palworld’s Workshop is still very active after the 1.0 launch, and several newer July titles are already seeing early mod frameworks appear on itch.io and Discord.

The Daggerless Verdict
Big remakes and franchise spin-offs are taking the headlines this week, but the quieter story remains the same: focused games with strong player retention (like Palworld) and steady tool improvements (like Godot) continue to give solo and small teams real opportunities. While large publishers restructure and chase spectacle, the underdogs who keep shipping, listening, and iterating are still finding audiences.

Check out the new releases if they interest you, keep an eye on Godot’s 4.8 progress, and keep refining your own staging branch. The indie scene is still the most reliable part of the industry right now.

Stay feral out there,
— Daggerless
